Cohh (Great Island) Community Centre is a 100,000 square foot facility which has been open to the public since 2008. Many groups currently use this central Community facility. The aim of the group is to operate a Community Centre for the benefit of the residents of Cobh which will provide educational services for the local community such as information services, training courses, workshops for people with disabilities, theatre workshops, and activities and all community based social and cultural activitie. In order to maximise the use of the current space and enable groups to make the space more versatile, SECAD funded soundproofing for six rooms in the centre located on the second and third floors and laid new floors in three rooms. In addition, a new kitchen, and blinds were installed and chairs for meeting room use were purchased.

This project has enabled multiple rooms to be used at the same time, which has kept existing customers who had experienced difficulties due to the noise levels; it has enabled services such as FAS computer courses to be operated in Cobh on a regular basis for unemployed people in the community and has also enabled the Community Centre to facilitate additional groups’ needs. RDP funding of €45,492 was allocated to this project.
