Douglas Young at Heart is a voluntary community group which works to provide services for up to and surrounding area. Through the Local Development Social Inclusion Programme, SECAD worked with the Care Ring Douglas Subsequently Douglas Young at Heart was allocated a RDP grant to establish a Friendly Telephone service for older people in the Grange, Donnybrook, Frankfield, Rochestown and Douglas area. Funds were allocated towards equipment and promotion costs for establishment of the service and training for the volunteers was provided by HSE. The service operates for one day a week (Monday) between 13.00 and 16.00 hours from Douglas Community Centre.
The Care Ring Douglas Friendly Telephone service aims to provide a support /social network for older people, to overcome a sense of isolation experienced by many older people particularly those living alone and provides social contact, conversation and access to information for up to 200 older people living in Douglas, Grange, Donnybrook, Frankfi eld and Rochestown. 200 older people in the Douglas area. Activities include computer classes, walking groups, physical activities classes and indoor bowls, knitting classes, computer classes and weekly outings.
In August 2009, Douglas Young at Heart approached SECAD and HSE for support in developing a structure to provide a support service to isolated older people in Douglas sub group, established in November 2009 to develop a service plan.
