Community Support Scheme

SECAD will manage the Scheme for the South and East Cork area. The area covered by SECAD spans two fishery districts i.e. parts of Cork and Lismore.

The Community Support Scheme (CSS) was established following a recommendation by the Report of the Independent Salmon Group. The focus of this Scheme is primarily on communities where mixed stock fishing for salmon including drift net fishing has been a well-established activity and where its withdrawal impacts on that community.

The Scheme is primarily for the development of additional economic opportunities for former crew members and employees in the processing and ancillary sectors in communities who have not been able to avail of payments from the Salmon Hardship Fund. It will focus on retraining of the affected labour force, diversification into non-salmon fishing activity and projects to promote the quality of the local environment.

The Scheme can support re-training of people previously involved in drift / draft net salmon fishing and ancillary services, diversification into non salmon fishing economic activity, education and employment preparation, projects to promote the quality of the coastal environment and other community projects.
