The Monkstown Marina provides a stunning marina for sailing, rowing and marine activities for this area and has provided new opportunities for the area in terms of leisure and marine activities, commercial and leisure. The marina canaccommodate boats up to 17m and consists of an outer perimeter of floating concrete break waters with fi ngered berths contained internally. The marina will enable a wider range of people, including older people, people with disabilities and some less active men and women to get involved in sailing. It is far easier and safer for such sailors to access their boats from a pontoon than a swing mooring. SECAD provided initial funding to assist in the development of an Environmental Statement (EIS) required to investigate the impact and capacity of developing a Marina in Monkstown, Co. Cork, from a social, economic and environmental perspective. Following the EIS, the Monkstown Bay Marina Company secured planning permission to build an 82 berth marina on the site, and also a foreshore licence.
The Monkstown Bay Marina was opened in September 2011. SECAD’s involvement and support was vital to this marina, and it would not have been achieved without the funding or support provided by SECAD.
