Empowering people in low-income communities to make healthier food choices

Supported through Safefood

The Community Food Initiatives (CFI) programme aims to positively influence eating habits of families in community settings across the island of Ireland. Funded by Safefood and managed by SECAD Partnership since 2016, it seeks to promote greater access to healthy, safe food in low-income areas. Since its launch, over 65,000 people have taken part in CFI activities — from cooking workshops and meal planning sessions to other hands-on community events.

CFI supports projects that develop healthy eating and cooking skills and those seeking to improve the availability of safe and healthy food in the locality. With a strong community development focus, the programme encourages healthier eating habits from an early age with a view to tackling longer term health inequalities.

SECAD has supported over 96 organisations across the island of Ireland to deliver community projects on nutrition, budgeting, food safety, and healthy eating.
