A journey through birdwatching hotspots
Supported through the LEADER Programme
In 1998, SECAD Partnership developed a unique habitats initiative along the East and South Cork coastline to protect biodiversity, generate awareness, and encourage the development of eco-tourism. This led to the creation of the South and East Cork Bird Trail, a 100+ km route featuring 28 prime birdwatching sites from Youghal to Kinsale. These sites were strategically located along the greater Cork Harbour area, one of Europe’s most important sites for migratory birds.

SECAD played a key role in bringing together various stakeholders, facilitating community consultation, and developing promotional resources, including a dedicated website, fold-out map, and video to enhance visitor navigation and education.
This project supported conservation, created public spaces, and boosted eco-tourism in South East Cork.

SECAD Partnership funds and advises local environmental initiatives, supporting over 60 biodiversity projects annually to promote sustainable community development. This is the story of one such project.
