Wexford schools benefit from Coolroe Solar Farm fund administered by SECAD

July 21, 2025

Three primary schools in the New Ross area have recently completed inspiring youth-focused projects, thanks to the support of the Coolroe Solar Farm community benefit fund, funded by EDF Renewables and managed by SECAD Partnership CLG.

The projects were showcased during a series of site visits on Wednesday, 11 June 2025, where each school principal shared how the funding has positively impacted their school community. These projects were supported through the fund’s 2024 themed allocation, which focused on youth services.

St. Leonard’s National School, Ballycullane

Principal Aoife Swan presented a newly developed outdoor sensory classroom and playground, designed to create a safe and inclusive space for all pupils, particularly those with special educational needs. The area encourages sensory engagement, social interaction, and outdoor learning.

Gusserane National School

Led by principal Adeline Foxe, the school transformed an unused area into “Spás Glas”, a sensory garden and outdoor classroom. The space includes a vegetable growing area, sensory path, seating, and a variety of sensory plants. It also features a solar-powered water feature and rainwater harvesting system, blending environmental learning with wellbeing and play.

Ballycullane National School

At Ballycullane NS, the focus was on active play and sport. The school upgraded its existing basketball court, adding fresh markings for both basketball and soccer, along with new goals and basketball units. The revitalised court now provides a dynamic and versatile sports area for students.
